The General Rules have been a United Methodist "rule of life" from the beginnings of Methodism. Those who joined Methodists showed they desired salvation by living into these guidelines for life: Do No Harm Do Good Attend to the Ordinances of God [Stay in love with God]
These three guidelines are a protected part of our church doctrine in the Book of Discipline. When being ordained (among other questions), clergy are asked: Do you know the general rules of our church? Will you keep them?
