From an early age, Pastor Jason felt drawn to both learning and serving. He earned his B.S. in History and Secondary Education from Appalachian State University in 1998, where he also led and participated in the Wesley Foundation campus ministry. He later earned his Master of Divinity from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, in 2001, and in 2013, he completed his Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, with a focus on “Preaching in the 21st Century.” His doctoral work, which explored using literature and culture as lenses through which to proclaim the Gospel, reflects his thoughtful, creative approach to ministry.
Throughout his career, Pastor Jason has served in several pastoral appointments, including First UMC in Morganton, Broad Street UMC in Statesville, and most recently, College Place UMC in Greensboro—recognized as the first Lighthouse Congregation in the Western North Carolina Conference. His ministry has also included teaching religion courses at Mitchell Community College and active involvement in conference leadership, including serving on the Worship Committee for Annual Conference, the District Committee on Ministry, and the Commission on Archives and History.
At the heart of Pastor Jason’s calling is a deep love for worship and music, a belief in the power of shared fellowship, and a steady commitment to justice and compassionate care. He understands faithful living to include meaningful worship, joyful connection with others, continual learning, and working toward God’s hope for the world. Whether he's preaching a sermon, teaching a Bible study, visiting a congregant, or sharing a laugh over coffee, Pastor Jason brings a calm, steady presence to everything he does. He often reflects on the wisdom of 1 John 4: “God is love,” and believes our calling is to share the love we’ve received with others.
But it’s not all work—Pastor Jason also treasures the simple joys of everyday life. You might find him exploring a museum, digging in the garden, watching the news with interest, or enjoying a walk around the block with his beloved Golden Retriever, Rosie. These ordinary moments, he reminds us, are sacred too—opportunities to encounter God’s grace in the midst of daily living.
